It's about time, that this seminal classic got a mention on here. It originally started in 1972 and finished it's original run in 1992. It ran for 20 years, over 1000 episodes were produced and it's one of the most successful Kids TV shows ever made.
The legendary tale of a man called Geoffrey who lived in a house with a genetically modified creature with a zip for a mouth called Zippy, a pink hippo called George and a big fluffy bear called Bungle. On paper it doesn't sound like much, but believe me it's good. ;D
During it's heyday it got massive viewing figures and it's host Geoffrey Hayes was one of the most famous men in Britain. Musical segments were a regular thing on "Rainbow" and were often provided by the trio Rod, Jane and Freddy.
It was still popular with audiences when it suddenly ended in 1992. ITV then tried (and failed) twice to replicate the success of the original show by reviving it. The first was in 1994, where it was again titled "Rainbow", the second revival was in 1997 called "Rainbow Days" both of them sadly didn't feature Geoffrey.
These remakes were done with the best of intentions but compared to the original, they just didn't come close.
To get you in the mood for discussing, here's the opening titles.
